Reimagining the Historic Lighting of the Tyler-Davidson Fountain
Dedicated to the Square in 1871, the Tyler Davidson Fountain has undoubtedly become an iconic symbol of Cincinnati. Originally designed to rival the great fountains of Europe, the bronze and granite fountain glorifies the blessings of water. Streams of water flow from the outstretched hands of the nine-foot-tall Genius of Water, affectionately known as “The Lady.” Below her, large human figures represent water’s practical uses, and on the base, four child figures represent the pleasures of water.
In the Square’s current design, the Fountain has been given a prominent, central position overlooking the Square, adjacent to ample space for seating and areas for major events. The fountain is turned on the Saturday before Major League Baseball’s Opening Day, and remains on until temperatures consistently dip below freezing, typically in late November or early December.
During colder months when the fountain is not running, we've turned to mimicking the streams of water with dazzling light displays to keep it lively. Once known as Winter Wonderlights, this cherished seasonal tradition has been thoughtfully reimagined to honor the legacy of the iconic lighting displays that graced Fountain Square in the 1960s. This year's updated installation offers a visually stunning experience that blends nostalgia with modern technology.
The CVG Fountain of Light installation will be lit and viewable during all hours of the day. The installation will dance and sparkle every 15 minutes.
Special thank you to CVG Airport for sponsoring the fountain installation!
